Italy reported 189 new fatalities in the past 24 hours on Thursday, taking the total death toll in just under three weeks since the outbreak began to 1,016.

Today’s figure was just below the single-day record of 196, reported on Wednesday. Italy has the second-highest number of deaths after China, official data showed.
The number of daily infections rose to 2,651, from 2,313 on Wednesday, reaching 15,113 overall. This total figure includes the deceased and recovered.

Of those originally infected, 1,258 had fully recovered compared to 1,045 the day before. This means the total number of active cases in Italy is 12,839.
Some 1,153 people were in intensive care against a previous 1,028. More than 600 of these intensive care patients are in the Lombardy region alone.

The northern region of Lombardy is by far the worst-hit part of Italy. It has also seen most of the deaths with 744 in total as of Thursday.
