ITALIAN people must have evacuation plans in place for the eruption of a massive underground volcano in southern Italy warned volcanic hazard expert.

Italy’s Campi Flegrei volcano is “active and will erupt again”, warned Dr Christopher Kilburn, a professor at University College London.
Dr Kilburn said: “They should be preparing for an eruption simply because it is an active volcano, not because an eruption is like it is expected soon or anything.
A new study has claimed the massive volcano could be gearing for another eruption, which could have disastrous consequences for the city of Naples. The region was the scene of two huge eruptions – the Campanian Ignimbrite (CI) eruption of 39,000 years ago and the Neapolitan Yellow Tuff (NYT) eruption which happened 15,000 years ago – plus many smaller events.
Campi Flegrei is located around 11 miles (18 kilometres) west of Naples, which is home to around a million people. Mount Vesuvius is around 13 miles away.

Unlike many volcanoes, Campi Flegrei is mainly flat and is accessible on foot. Some 360,000 people live across Campi Flegrei’s caldera.
