Italy reports largest DROP in active COVID-19 cases
Italy reported 285 new fatalities from coronavirus, bringing the total to 27,967, with the largest daily drop in cases since the beginning of the outbreak.
The data released by the Italian Civil Protection Department confirm that the country has left behind the peak of the pandemic as it braces for a partial restart of activities and a relaxation of the nationwide lockdown on May 4.
The tally of active infections fell by 3,106, the biggest drop ever. Meanwhile, recoveries continued to climb, jumping to a record 75,945 as more patients left intensive care, easing pressure on Italy’s struggling healthcare system.
The epicenter of the Italian outbreak remains the northern Lombardy region, where fatalities continued to rise, reaching 13,772, about half of the country’s total deaths.
