Two foreign tourists, believed to be German, have been filmed swimming down the Grand Canal in Venice, causing outrage in the lagoon city.

The two men were filmed by local resident Augusto Maurandi as they swam in the canal, watched by their relatives, on 3 June.

The men entered the water in the Erbaria area of the Grand Canal and got out at Riva del Vin, swimming under the city’s famed Rialto Bridge along the way.

Maurandi shared his video on social media. In the meantime, police caught up with the two tourists who were walking dressed in just their swimming trunks.

Last July police in Venice fined two German tourists a total of €950 after they were caught making coffee with a travel cooker on the steps of the Rialto Bridge.
