A disastrous floods hit last night the extreme south/east of Sicily, between the provinces of Syracuse and Ragusa, in one of the drier areas of Italy.

In a few hours between Ispica, Rosolini, Modica and Noto, over 150mm of rain fell yesterday, with peaks of 200mm in two hours at Ispica. During the night the storms climbed the eastern Sicilian coast to reach Catania
A man, died overwhelmed by the fury of the water on the Noto-Rosolini highway 115: his name was Giuseppe Cappello and he was 52 years old.
Firefighters have recovered and rescued a total of 16 people in the Syracuse area. The sixteen people rescued were trapped in their cars. Provincial 19 was closed to traffic to avoid danger to motorists.
In addition, more than 60 goats, sheep, and lambs were found dead in Ispica. Also in Ispica , in Cava Mortella an enormous chasm opened up: hundreds of people have been evacuated since last night.
